Learn a little more about the trees found around our area by reading below!
Magnolia ( Magnolia grandiflora )
Magnolias are a symbol of the American South, and it’s no wonder: from the glorious flowers in spring and summer to the charming leaves in the fall, these trees are show-stoppers. Typically, a sweet bay magnolia will grow 20-30 feet, sometimes with multiple trunks. For best results, plant it in moist, well-drained soil and make sure to keep it well-mulched.
Red Maple ( Acer rubrum )
You’ll instantly recognize the leaf of the red maple - it’s the one found on the Canadian flag! Red maples are found up and down the East Coast. These trees are most spectacular in fall, when the leaves turn their trademark red color. However, they also look great in the spring, as they start to flower before other trees. While red maples are fairly hardy and will do well in most soil conditions, be sure to keep the weedwhacker well away from yours and keep it healthy to avoid gloomy scale.
Dogwood ( Cornus florida )
Another symbol of the American South, dogwoods provide beautiful color in the spring and fall. Their flowers are typically white, but some come in pink and even pale red. In the fall, their leaves turn a lovely reddish-purple. Dogwoods prefer well-drained, moist soil. There are many different cultivars available, so you can easily select the one that appeals most to you.
Oak ( Quercus sp. )
Nearly 600 species of oak are found worldwide, including about 90 here in the United States and 30 in North Carolina alone. They’re particularly common in the Raleigh area - in fact, Raleigh is often called the City of Oaks. Oaks can live for hundreds of years and make a wonderful habitat for many different birds and animals. With so many native species to choose from, it’s easy for you to find one that will thrive on your property!
